Individual

This award is for someone who truly goes above and beyond for their community. They might lead local projects, support vulnerable neighbours, or give their time and energy to bring people together. They’re the heartbeat of their community and we want to celebrate everything they do.

Alan Hudders

Alan has played a leading role in the success of the Senior Citizens Support Group, helping it grow from just 30 members to over 850. Since joining as a volunteer in 2011, Alan has taken on multiple roles including Secretary, Vice Chair and now Chair. He oversees more than 25 activities and events each month, manages funding and sponsorships, and leads the Board of Trustees.

Alan was instrumental in establishing a dedicated office space in Horbury Town Hall, which now serves as the group’s administrative hub. During the pandemic, he helped coordinate over 500 doorstep deliveries to vulnerable residents. He also led a project to install community benches made by disabled people, placed in locations where older residents can rest and enjoy the outdoors.

Alan’s dedication was recognised when the group received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2022. He prepared all the documentation for the nomination, demonstrating his commitment to improving the lives of older people in the community.

Mel Jackson

Mel is the driving force behind Airedale Babybank, a community initiative that supports families in need. Mel gives her time freely, working tirelessly to prepare packages, respond to requests and organise seasonal appeals such as Christmas gifts and Easter eggs for children.

In addition to her work with the baby bank, Mel helps organise the Fryston Gala, coordinating vendors, logistics and community engagement. She is known for her quiet dedication and prefers to stay out of the spotlight, focusing instead on helping others.

Mel’s efforts ensure that no child is left out and that families receive the support they need. Her work is a powerful example of how one person’s generosity and commitment can make a lasting difference.

Laura Joanne Stalker

Laura is the founder of the Castleford Community Pantry, a project that provides food, clothing and support to people in need. She organises weekly breakfasts, twice-weekly food banks and packed lunches during school holidays. Laura also collects clothing donations and helps families affected by homelessness or domestic violence.

Despite working and raising a young family, Laura dedicates her time to sourcing donations, applying for grants and leading a team of volunteers. She has overcome challenges such as losing her venue and continues to expand the pantry’s services to meet growing demand.

Laura’s work reduces food waste, supports mental health and teaches her children the values of kindness and community service. She is a true community champion whose impact is felt across Castleford.

Janet Pickersgill

Janet has brought new life to her local independent living scheme by creating a weekly coffee morning that includes bingo, raffles and social activities. Since moving into the scheme 18 months ago, Janet has worked to ensure that all residents feel welcome and included.

Her Thursday sessions attract around 30 attendees and provide a space for laughter, conversation and connection. Janet gives her time freely, even making sure the event continues when she is away. She supports vulnerable residents and is already planning a festive celebration for Christmas.

Janet’s efforts have helped reduce loneliness and build a stronger sense of community. Her dedication and kindness make her a valued and much-loved member of the scheme.
